Thomas: The founder's thoughts on Fantasy Football
Fantasy sports aren’t just a pastime for me; they’re a passion that I’ve been nurturing since I was young. The thrill of owning a piece of a real athlete and sharing in their success has always been a source of exhilaration for me. The strategy of predicting which athlete will perform the best in a given week, the stats that help inform these predictions, and the rush of watching a game and seeing “my” player score — all of these things have always captured my imagination and driven me to create more engaging and innovative ways to play.
I’ve always been fascinated by stats, stories, and big games, and I’ve dedicated countless hours to learning about different sports and their intricacies. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of different players, analysing their performance against different defences, and identifying the factors that might influence their success — all of these things are essential to playing fantasy sports at the highest level.
My passion for stats and strategy led me to create my own custom fantasy football league at the tender age of 8. I was dissatisfied with the limitations of platforms like Yahoo and ESPN, so I created my own innovative auction draft format, with keepers and a free agency system. Today, my league has become an exclusive “club” with a waiting list for new teams, and it’s still going strong.
But I didn’t stop there. I was an early adopter of Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS), which allowed players to have more autonomy in setting their weekly line-ups and creating unique strategies to beat the algorithm. While I found success in DFS, I still felt like something was missing. I wanted a way to invest in players over the long run, to scout them early on and earn advantages for my hard work. That’s why I invented Epoch.
