Gamers have been paid for one reason or the other for centuries…

The Go game, also known as Weiqi, is believed to have originated in China more than 2,500 years ago and Chess is also an ancient game, with origins dating back to India in the 6th century AD.

They can also work as game commentators, analyzing and commenting on professional games for an audience.

In Japan, during the Edo period (1603–1868), Go teachers were often affiliated with Go houses, where they would teach and play Go with students and patrons…
It is said that some Go teachers were able to earn a comfortable living and even become wealthy, while others struggled to make ends meet.
