Decentralization
Decentralization is one of the core philosophies of the cryptocurrency and blockchain industries. But what does decentralization mean, and how can Epoch, a sports entertainment brand, promote this idea in its ecosystem?
Decentralization
At its most fundamental, decentralization is the process whereby control or power is moved towards a system where many entities have autonomy, ownership, and freedom.
An example of a centralized system is a national energy supply where all the electricity generated is controlled and distributed by a small group of people, and from a central set of locations.
The opposite to this might be where everyone has solar panels and generates their own electricity, then shares the excess power on a community-owned grid.
Another great example of decentralization is society and its ability to have freedom of thought. For most people around the world we are lucky enough to have freedom over what we can think, freedom to express those thoughts and the ability to claim ownership and autonomy over them. What this means practically is that there are very few institutions that tell us what to think in an absolute way. of course, biases exist in every culture and society, but by and large, most people are able to openly think about whatever they like.
This is decentralized as there are many many people with thoughts, as opposed to one very powerful group or institution that defines what people can think for everyone else.
So how about money?
Cryptocurrencies seek to decentralize the control, autonomy, and freedom of use for the money system. As the church and state were separated in many countries around the world over the last few hundred years, so cryptocurrency seeks to separate money and state. To place the value of the monetary system into public ownership where everyone contributes to its success, and the control of the system is embedded in code and democratically decided upon.
So how do we decentralize sports entertainment?
When you think of your favorite sports teams, how much control do you have over the way the team functions? How much freedom do you have to help define its future?
Sports, particularly as an entertainment business, is a highly centralized industry. Teams and leagues are typically owned and run by small groups of people who have control over all aspects of the business. Leagues are also owned and run by small organizations that are allowed to define their own direction regardless of popular opinion.
So what is the alternative?
Epoch is the alternative.
Epoch’s plan is to create a digital sports league that is entirely owned and operated by a community of fans. Fans will have complete control over all aspects of the league, from players and clubs to tactical decisions and marketing strategies.
As a fan, you will be able to own stakes in the careers of your favorite players, define the directions of their careers, and even participate in the day-to-day upkeep of a player’s life.
As a fan you will be able to own stakes in the futures of your favorite clubs, electing yourself and others to a board of directors. Always being able to have a democratic right to affect the outcome of any decision the club makes, from tactical changes to player transfers, and even marketing, media rights, and partnerships.
As a fan you will be able to own, guide, grow, and ultimately profit from the success of your assets, be they a player, a club, or indeed the entire league.
Imagine if you had shared in the career of Michael Jordan the day he was signed by the Chicago Bulls.
Imagine if you had been part of the team that led Manchester United or Barcelona toward being one of the greatest clubs in football history.
Imagine being able to have your say the day the NFL decided to comment on whether it was okay for players to take a knee during the national anthem, and for your voice to actually matter and be heard.
But this sounds impossible?
Of course, up until recently, these visions of decentralization in the sports industry have been somewhat idealistic. But no more! Technology has progressed at its usual pace over the last few decades and we now have the tools and ability to bring people ownership and autonomy over the very sports league they love.
Epoch’s platform will use cutting-edge technologies, such as machine learning and AI simulations, to create a digital sports league that is just as exciting and unpredictable as a real-life league. Blockchain technologies, such as NFTs and DAOs, will allow fans to have complete control over their assets and communities.
Epoch’s team is passionate about creating a platform that will bring people together and lift us all up. As the Epoch league succeeds, everyone involved will benefit from its success.
Of course, not every sports team does well, but a part of building a sports league and enjoying the drama of a good sport, is accepting the fact that we don’t win every game. But where there is enthusiasm, passion, and mechanics in place. There is always every chance to succeed the next time around.
Finally, Epoch’s goal is to create a sports league that is accessible to everyone, regardless of their location, banking situation, or resources. All you need is a connection and passion.
